St Mary's Parish Church.

We offer a warm welcome to our church, at the centre of the village of Cilcain, in a building which has been used for worship for at least 600 years. The church has an interesting history, but is alive and giving witness to God in the present day. The church has two aisles, with most services conducted in the south aisle. Here, under the ornately-carved late mediaeval roof are the pews, and at the east end the chancel with altar, choir stalls and organ.

There are services on Sunday mornings as follows:

1st Sunday of the month 11am. Communion, modern liturgy

2nd Sunday of the month 8am. Prayer Book Communion

3rd Sunday of the month 11am. Morning Praise

4th Sunday of the month 11.00am Communion, modern liturgy

On 5th Sundays there is a joint service in this or a neighboring church.

On Wednesdays there is usually a Communion service at 10.30am.

History

The north aisle was devastated by fire after a Plygain service on Christmas morning 1532. It stood without a roof for 210 years until in the 18th century the vicar of the time paid for it to be refurbished. For more than 100 years, from 1888, it fell into disuse, but has recently been renewed and is now an integral and comfortable area in which services and social meetings are held, including a weekly Communion on Wednesday mornings and a toddlers/ parents group on Thursday afternoons.

The main door to the south aisle is open every day from early on to sunset, and the north aisle on special occasions. Services are held on Sunday mornings and others by arrangement. We welcome visitors, and those who wish to propose using the church for suitable purposes. Please contact the vicar or the churchwardens.
